Job Description:
Provide science-based leadership on core competency and innovation projects for ophthalmic surgical equipment.
Principal scientist position in a medical device company. The successful candidate will be able to provide scientific leadership on new product innovations for ophthalmic surgical equipment at the individual contributor level. The candidate will be responsible for evaluating the science behind new product ideas from internal and external sources and as well as generating and proving new product ideas. They will also be responsible for creating and maintaining a database of past and current product innovations and patents, and creating and maintaining an industry wide IP map. Key areas of scientific insight include fluidic and ultra-sonic principles; familiarity with electrosurgical concepts will be of benefit. Good laboratory experience and practice will be required, including the design and documentation of experiments and automation of data collection. The candidate should expect to spend significant time at a bench building initial prototypes and demonstrating new principles. The successful candidate will be creating multiple successful patent applications and supporting multiple science papers by surgeons each year.
Specific job duties includes:
*Planning, executing, documenting and reporting lab activity at the individual contributor level to provide insight into underlying scientific principals of operation and evidence of scientific feasibility of new product ideas.
*Ideation, invention and feasibility demonstration of self-generated concepts.
*: Monitor and report on ongoing scientific changes and evolution within the ophthalmic surgical device industry.
*Planning, executing, documenting and reporting lab activity to provide scientific date supporting marketing proof points of features on existing and new devices.
*Review and evaluate externally and internally generated new product ideas and provide evidence based recommendations on next directions.
*Develop internal procedures and standards for maintenance of laboratory investigation records, quality of invention releases, and feasibility experiment design
Qualifications
Education:
PhD in physics or other science area or equivalent experience in fluidics and ultrasound preferred. Candidates with an MS or a background in electrical or mechanical engineering will be considered based on past accomplishments.
Experience: 10+ years expected / preferred, but portfolio of patents, papers and innovative development more critical.
Special Skills:
Good laboratory and sciences skills expected, including documentation of activity. Must be capable of building up automated data collection systems and mathematical modeling and simulation of new concepts. Excellent oral and written communication skills required for communicating recommendations to management and external peers. We expect competence in Mathematica / MathCad or other simulation tool, as well as software manipulation of video images.
